This Week In 5th Grade:
NWEA: All Fall NWEA testing is now completed! We took the reading, math and science portions! We will discuss more at our fall conferences.
The students did excellent on Monday and Tuesday while I was away at science training.
Pencil Sharpener: The pencil sharpener that I bought for our classroom this year broke this week due to misuse by the students. I will not replace the pencil sharpener at this time as it cost my $40 of my own money. I ask that you send your students with a miniature, personal sharpeners to use at their desks.
Please ask your student about our Essential 55! Our next Essential 55 of the week will be, the field trips.

The Week Ahead
Conferences! Conferences are coming! Conferences begin Thursday, October 12 through Tuesday, October 17. You can sign up for a time on either Thursday or Tuesday or schedule another time on Friday or Monday. Please schedule with me by Monday, October 9th. Confirmation forms will go home Monday afternoon.
Field Trip: Our field trip to the Grand Rapids Public Museum is this Friday. Permission slips must be turned in by Monday, October 9th with the $3 field trip fee. We will leave at 9:00am and return by 2:15pm. The school will provide packed lunch of soy butter and jelly sandwiches. If your child plans to pack their own lunch, please let me know by Monday.
It Takes a Village
At New Branches, we strongly believe in the idea that it takes a village to raise a child. In this section, I will share ways in which we are working together as a village to raise our children.
Birthdays:  If you plan to bring something in for your child’s birthday, I would like a 24 hour notice before doing so. Our day is planned out to the minute and I want to make sure students have the time to share their special day with the class. We also have many allergies including nuts and bananas. Please consider a healthy option, preferably one with less sugar. Such suggested items could include fruit or veggies, pretzels, popcorn, trail mix(peanut free), yogurt, chex mix or goodie bags to go home.
